I like to pretend that I hate it when people define queer, but sometimes I revel in a good definition like this.
(via innerfatgirl)
The minute you say, “I’m a feminist but I have a boyfriend/I don’t hate men,”
you’re erasing your fellow queer and lesbian feminists. You might think that you’re standing up for yourself, trying to “break” the stereotype, but it’s a [heterosexual &…
I CAN’T SAY ENOUGH how much I love all of you and all of the different ways you support me. It allows me to continue to be invested in my politics, and make beauty and revolution like new and sparkly ways. I have so much appreciation for all of you in my heart.
That being said, I can’t stress…
There is a buzz around Beyonce’s appearance in a French magazine, L’Officiel for a tribute to Nigerian musician and activist, Fela Kuti. If you are not aware of whom he is, Kuti is the king of Afrobeat and used his music to express the ills…

Really? WTF? Here’s a crazy, whacky idea: why don’t you trust people FIRST, rather than judge us by some arbitrary standards that we’re not allowed access to anyway because we’re cis? It’s just a fucking repeat of the old-school feminist trope, “You aren’t a feminist because I say you aren’t.” Great way to fracture activism, there.
But hey, I don’t NEED your approval. I just think you’re a jerk, which is really something that transcends gender.
Writing posts about trans people and trans hatred isn’t (in and of itself) enough, either.
What I want to know is: Are you making a real effort to move away from ciscentric constructions of gender? Of sexuality? Of feminism? When one of us points out that you’ve framed an issue in…
Bolded: The voice of cis privilege. You may have the luxury of trusting people first without fearing for your physical safety. Trans people aren’t as lucky.
Aw… you aren’t allowed access to a tiny little corner of the trans community because you’re cis? Boo hoo. The rest of the world, a good 99.99999% of it, is covered in signs that read, “Trans people need not apply.” In sightly less polite language.
Amy I think I love you
I just saw this commentary, and I want it on my blog. Thanks for the support.
I think this is a little ridiculous, honestly, even being trans. There’s truth in kimbo’s words. Any sort of discrimination, even the minority discriminating against the majority, is negative. What’s the point?
So I don’t get to choose who I will and won’t trust because that’s “discrimination” against cis people?
We don’t yet live in a world where trans people and cis people are equal; we live in a world where cis people wield oppressive power over trans people. Denying this reality doesn’t help us trans folks. I would love to be in a position where trusting cis people, sight unseen, was a possibility for me. But it just isn’t. And again, even if it was, I would still have the right to set my own boundaries.
What about this is so hard to understand?
Wait, I don’t get it. Is it because cis sexism is a new idea in some people’s vocabularies? Why does this seem outlandish? OF COURSE trans* people aren’t going to automatically trust that cis people are going to be totally down and totally awesome, until cis people step the fuck up and start BEING down and BEING awesome, and not just when it’s convenient or when someone is watching and going to give you gold stars, but also when it is hard or unpopular or inconvenient. Why is that not obvious?
And not to compare -isms, but: I don’t trust white people to respect me until they do it, I don’t trust men to respect me until they do it, I don’t trust straight people to respect me until they do it, and I damn sure do not trust straight white men to respect me until they do it. And I am a hard-ass (as a few straight white men who refused to make the cut have whined to me), and yet there are plenty of straight, white, and/or male people who I trust very deeply. NO SHIT.
And when I was young and didn’t know the word “trans*” but did know I wanted to be a daddy someday, I also knew that adults didn’t respect my use of male pronouns for myself. So I started introducing myself to other kids, adding quickly, “I’m a boy!” before their parents could convince them otherwise. I also knew to give other answers when people asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, so I picked occupations instead of saying I was going to be a daddy. This was by the time I was 5. Kids will be incredibly trusting if you give them reason to be, and yet I knew I couldn’t trust anyone with any of those things when I was that young.
So why, after a lifetime of trans* people being disrespected and denied their identities, would cis people DEMAND to be trusted? The only reason I can think of is to show what cis privilege LOOKS LIKE.
If you haven’t been following the uprisings in the Middle East closely, you probably aren’t aware of the big inside joke that has sprung up among the youth of virtually the entire region: the KFC conspiracy.
It started in Egypt, when the state television tried to “prove” that the protesters in…

“It’s certainly an impressive collection, but one that is cloistered away from the public at large. The catch is that you have to be a scholar to access it. If you’re writing your dissertation on feminist theory, you’re in luck. If you just want to see the blue dress because Pussy Whipped changed your life—and, if given the chance, it certainly will—that’s another story entirely.”
This is cool, confusing, high/low, institutional/subcultural. Mostly it’s punctuated by what I did last night: shake Kathleen Hanna’s hand.
I don’t feel o- with this.
Wow, loo- at all the things you typed! I -now how overhwlemed bethe must feel, but don’t worry, I can read.

Alright. Good point.
I’m planning a fat protest flash mob at forever 21, but I’m unsure what the flash(fat?)mob should do.
suggestions?
I too- myself to a Paul Baribeau show at the communications museum and ate a vegan cupca-e and listened to beautiful music and layed my head on my friends shoulder and rubbed paper as I heard the room sing. It was sooooo nice.
